Women's History Month 2022

Women’s History Month 2022

I was invited to lead and design the campaign for Women’s History Month, put together by Starbucks’ Women’s Impact Network. The work also was picked up for chapters around the world, including in Hong Kong and Europe. Final deliverables: event posters, teams backgrounds, email headers, presentation templates, tshirt, enamel pin, bandana, and social networking posts.

My Role: Creative Director, Designer, Illustrator.
Writer: Sara Hendrickson

Supportive, Evolving, and Empowering

While creating the artwork, I kept going back to the WIN (Women’s Impact Network) mission statement to "ignite the power of women through partners, allies and community." I was very inspired by the strength of the statement "women of action and ambition."

One of the network pillars is "WIN for all" and in developing the creative, I considered what that means for inclusivity, intersectionality, and representation.

Humanity is such a core part of the Starbucks brand, so while illustrating these people I didn't want them to feel generic and instead wanted you to see individuals with personalities, struggles, aspirations, and of course, stories. You're seeing that community and encouragement in the large group, but also looking at the way one person interacts with another I want you to get a sense of the love and respect that we have for each other.

I asked Sara, a Senior Writer in the Studio, to collaborate on building the creative direction. Her tagline “A New Story to Tell” resonated with me because of the optimism and openness that it gives for sharing. At the same time, I appreciate that it also acknowledges that not every story is happy and there's beauty and honor in having that space to support and grow one another.

We're celebrating Starbucks as a part of this so woven into the artwork there's baristas and coffee cups. There's also people holding coffee plants to honor the women in coffee and origins. We have coffee botanicals throughout, which represent growth and the role women play in the coffee story.

I've also created badges that you see in different spaces, including a siren, who is such an empowering representation of strength and storytelling for the brand.

There's a lot of passion behind this work. I always gravitate towards art that celebrates the strength of women and the beauty of nature, so getting to pair these together while collaborating with leaders of the Women’s Impact Network was a dream project.
